Leadership is a journey of growth and influence, often misunderstood as simply holding a title or position. John C. Maxwell’s model of the Five Levels of Leadership provides a clear roadmap for this journey. The first level, Position, is where people follow because they have to. It is the entry point but offers minimal influence.
The second level, Permission, is where leadership becomes personal. People follow because they want to, built on trust and relationships. Skipping this level often leads to resistance and low morale. Building genuine connections is essential before expecting results.
The third level, Production, is where leadership yields tangible results. People respect leaders who deliver success. This stage builds momentum and credibility.
The fourth level, People Development, focuses on empowering others to grow and lead. Leaders who invest in developing others build loyalty and multiply their impact.
The final level, Personhood, is the pinnacle where leadership is based on who the leader is and what they represent. It is earned through years of consistent influence and integrity.
Use this framework to assess your current leadership level and plan intentional growth to reach your highest potential.
