Imagine a young child, curious and observant, watching the world of adults around them. This child notices something strange: the adults seem to suffer endlessly, caught in conflict and pain. One day, the child has a profound realization—adults believe their thoughts as absolute truth.
Language plays a powerful role in this process. When we name something—a bird, a tree, a person—we create a mental label that replaces the living, breathing reality with a concept.
Consider how a child delights in repeating their own name, discovering identity through language. Yet this identity is just a thought, a label, not the essence of who they truly are. As we grow, we build elaborate images of ourselves and others, all based on thoughts and words.
This section invites us to question our identification with thoughts, to notice how believing every idea in our mind traps us in a dream of separation.
As we move forward, we will explore how this identification with the egoic mind forms a trance state, and how awakening from this trance is the key to ending suffering and finding true freedom.
