Welcome, dear friend, to a journey that begins not with a step, but with a gentle pause. Imagine sitting quietly, not striving, not even seeking, but simply existing—like a mountain, a silent witness to the passage of clouds. This is the heart of meditation, a state so subtle and profound that it transcends all techniques and traditions.
Many confuse meditation with concentration or contemplation. Concentration is the narrowing of the mind onto a single point, like a scientist peering through a microscope, oblivious to the world. Contemplation is broader, a mind wandering thoughtfully within a subject, as a philosopher might. But meditation?
Consider the difference between hearing and listening. Hearing is mechanical—your ears receive sounds, but your mind may be elsewhere. Listening, however, is an act of presence; you are here, now, receptive, not clouded by inner chatter. Meditation is this listening, not to sounds, but to existence itself.
In the language of ancient India, this state is called 'dhyana.' There is no true equivalent in English, for 'dhyana' is not about meditating upon something, but about being meditation itself. The word traveled, becoming 'Chan' in China and 'Zen' in Japan, each time carrying the same essence: a state of silent, alert being.
