A neuroscientific and philosophical exploration revealing the self as an illusion and offering pathways to reduce suffering through right-brain awareness.
The left brain's interpreter often fabricates stories to make sense of actions it does not control.

Imagine your mind as a grand storyteller, tirelessly weaving tales to make sense of your daily experiences. This storyteller is none other than your left brain, a master interpreter that seeks coherence even when the facts are incomplete or contradictory.
Consider fascinating experiments where patients had their brain’s two hemispheres disconnected to control severe epilepsy. These split-brain patients revealed a startling truth: the left brain, which governs language, often invents explanations for actions initiated by the right brain, which it cannot access. For instance, when a patient’s left hand (controlled by the right brain) pointed to a snow shovel while the right hand (left brain) selected a chicken, the left brain confidently explained, “The chicken foot goes with the chicken, and you need a shovel to clean out the coop.”
Another example involved a patient who got up and walked after the right brain was shown the word “walk.” When asked why, the left brain replied, “I'm going to get a Coke,” inventing a reason to explain an action it did not initiate.
This storytelling function extends beyond split-brain patients. In everyday life, your left brain continuously interprets sensory inputs, emotions, and bodily states, weaving them into a coherent narrative of 'you.'
Understanding this mechanism is crucial because it reveals that much of what we take as reality—including our identity—is shaped by a narrative process prone to error and illusion. This insight opens the door to questioning and ultimately loosening our identification with the stories our minds tell us, reducing mental suffering rooted in mistaken beliefs.
As we journey deeper, we will explore the tools the left brain uses to build these stories, particularly language and categorization, and how they further entrench the illusion of self. Let us now turn to these fascinating mechanisms that shape our inner world.
