Imagine, for a moment, that your life is a precious jewel buried deep beneath layers of mud and dirt. This jewel represents your true nature, your innate potential for enlightenment, often called Buddha-nature. But this jewel is hidden, obscured by the habits, emotions, and confusions accumulated over countless lifetimes.
Yet, this opportunity is fragile. Many live their entire lives caught up in mundane pursuits, unaware or indifferent to the spiritual potential within. Like an explorer returning empty-handed from an island of treasure, they squander this precious chance.
Consider the analogy of the jewel hidden in mud. The jewel itself never changes; its brilliance is always present. However, the mud obscures its shine. Similarly, our mind’s fundamental nature is pure and luminous, but it is veiled by confusion and emotional afflictions. The spiritual path is the process of removing these obscurations, revealing the radiant clarity that has always been there.
In this light, every moment of our human life is an invaluable chance to cultivate the qualities that will bring us closer to enlightenment. This includes ethical conduct, meditation, and the development of compassion. It is not about fabricating something new, but about uncovering what is already present.
As we begin this journey, it is vital to appreciate the rarity of human existence and the preciousness of the opportunities it affords. This understanding fuels a sense of urgency and dedication, inspiring us to embark wholeheartedly on the path. With this foundation, we move naturally to contemplate the impermanence of life and the importance of mindfulness of death, which will be the focus of our next reflection.
