Imagine standing beneath a vast night sky, the stars appearing as mere glowing dots, serene and unchanging. For millennia, humanity has looked upward, weaving stories to explain the rhythms of the heavens. These stories, myths of gods and magic, were our earliest attempts at explanation. Yet, though compelling and culturally rich, these myths were easily altered, their details swapped without affecting their core claims. They were, at heart, bad explanations—flexible, untestable, and ultimately incapable of guiding us toward deeper truths.
Consider the ancient belief that seasons were caused by the moods of deities. This explanation could easily accommodate any observation by adjusting the gods' feelings or actions. In contrast, the true explanation—that the Earth's axis is tilted relative to its orbit—cannot be so easily varied. Its details are tightly linked to the physical world, giving it universal reach: it explains seasons not just here, but everywhere, now and in the distant past or future.
As we move forward, we will explore how this quest for good explanations brings us closer to reality, transcending the limitations of our senses and instruments, and how it reveals the cosmic significance of human creativity. Let us journey into the next chapter, where we uncover how indirect observations, filtered through layers of theory, bring us ever nearer to the truth of the universe.
