Imagine standing at a crossroads in life, surrounded by numerous paths, each promising different outcomes. Often, when faced with such moments, we ask questions like, 'Is this allowed?' or 'Will this make me happy?' But what if the true key to navigating these crossroads lies not in these common questions but in a more profound one:
Throughout life, the questions we ask ourselves shape the choices we make. Many are subconscious, hidden beneath the surface, yet they direct our actions. We might wonder about risks, potential gains, or the feelings involved, but rarely do we consider whether our choice is wise in the fullest sense. This oversight is why so many find themselves trapped in regret, looking back and asking, 'How could I have been so foolish?'
Consider the example of someone buying a car. Instead of asking merely 'Can I afford this?' or 'Is this model popular?', what if they asked, 'Is this the wise choice for my financial future and lifestyle?' Such a question might lead to a more thoughtful decision, avoiding unnecessary debt or impractical choices.
Our natural tendency is to operate by two main rules: get the most out of life and avoid trouble. But this often leads us to test limits, to live on the edge of acceptability, hoping to maximize gain while minimizing risk. Unfortunately, this approach clouds judgment and invites consequences. The key to foolproofing our lives lies in shifting our focus from 'Is it acceptable?' to 'Is it wise?'
As we embark on this journey of learning, we will explore how wisdom can illuminate the path ahead, helping us avoid pitfalls and embrace choices that honor our deepest values and God's guidance. This first insight sets the foundation for all that follows: the questions we ask shape our destiny.
Now, let us turn our attention to the different ways people respond to wisdom, and how understanding these attitudes can help us move closer to wise living.
