Imagine a quiet morning, the gentle rays of the sun just beginning to touch the earth, and you find yourself standing at the threshold of a new journey. This is the spirit of 'atha'—the auspicious beginning, the moment when you decide, with your whole being, to step onto the path of yoga.
The Yoga Sutras open with this word, 'atha,' inviting us to embrace the present as a sacred entryway. When you choose to begin—whether it’s a new practice, a relationship, or a way of seeing yourself—the universe seems to align, offering subtle support. But this journey asks for more than excitement; it calls for commitment, the kind that grounds and anchors you when distractions arise, and when old patterns threaten to pull you back.
At the heart of this journey is 'citta,' the heart-mind. Unlike the Western notion of mind as mere intellect, citta is a vast, shimmering field where thoughts, emotions, memories, and habits mingle.
Consider the way children learn: with open hearts and eager repetition, they absorb everything around them. They are not yet burdened by the obstacles adults accumulate—doubt, cynicism, fear of failure.
Yet, as adults, we often bite off more than we can chew, scattering our attention across too many projects, or giving up when results aren’t instant. The wisdom of yoga reminds us to pause, to reflect: Which commitments truly matter? What can be set aside, so we can give our best energy to what is most meaningful?
As we step onto this path, let us remember: readiness is not a destination, but a continual return to the present moment. Commitment is the gentle thread that weaves our intentions into reality. And the heart-mind is both our guide and our companion, holding the potential for clarity, compassion, and transformation.
As we settle into this journey, let’s turn now to the core principles that will guide us—those timeless teachings that illuminate the way forward and help us discern what truly matters on the path of yoga.
