Let’s begin our journey with a gentle breath, as if you’re waking from a long, deep sleep. Imagine humanity at the edge of dawn, not yet aware of its own reflection, moving by the rhythms of instinct and the silent guidance of an inner intelligence. This is what Holmes calls 'Instinctive Man'—a being who acts, feels, and survives, but does not yet know itself.
But then, something stirs. A question arises—'Why?'—and with it, the first flicker of conscious thought. This is the moment Holmes describes as the first great discovery: the realization that we can think, that we can know, that we can say 'I Am.' It’s as if the universe itself leans in, whispering, 'Now you are awake.' This awakening is not just a mental event; it is the birth of individuality.
From this point, humanity is no longer carried along by the tides of evolution alone. Now, each person must choose, must seek, must struggle and strive. The journey becomes personal. The longing for something more—a sense of incompletion, a yearning for meaning—begins to haunt the heart. This is the 'inner sense' Holmes speaks of, the mystical urge that propels us to build cities, write poetry, ask questions, and search for the divine.
The examples are all around us: the first time a child asks, 'Who am I?'; the moment an artist sees a blank canvas and imagines a world; the instant a scientist looks at the stars and wonders what lies beyond. Each is a reenactment of that original awakening, a living echo of the first 'I Am.' This is what Holmes calls the greatest discovery of all time—the discovery of Mind.
And so, as we begin this audiobook, remember that your own journey mirrors that of humanity itself.
