Digital Dirt: How Your Online Brand Can Make or Break Your Job Search
Clean Up Your Digital Footprint and Build a Magnetic LinkedIn Profile
Think your resume is the only thing that matters? Think again. In the age of Google, your digital footprint is your second resume—and sometimes, it’s the first thing employers see. Ian Siegel’s ‘Get Hired Now!’ reveals that 70% of employers check candidates’ social media before making a hiring decision, and over half have found something that led them to reject a candidate.
Start by Googling yourself. What comes up? If there’s anything you wouldn’t want a hiring manager to see—party photos, controversial opinions, or unprofessional comments—set those accounts to private or delete old posts. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are best kept for friends, not recruiters.
But don’t hide everything. LinkedIn should be your public, professional face. Use a recent, friendly photo. Fill out your profile with clear job titles, a compelling summary, and five or more skills for maximum visibility. Ask for recommendations from colleagues and managers, and write a few for others. Share industry articles, comment thoughtfully, and join groups related to your field.
References matter too. Prepare your references in advance—ask for permission, provide context, and even draft a recommendation letter if needed. The more polished your online presence, the more likely you are to be discovered and contacted by recruiters.
In today’s world, your online brand is a living extension of your resume. Audit it regularly, curate it carefully, and let it work for you—not against you.
