Let’s begin our journey with a gentle unraveling of the stories we’ve been told since childhood. Imagine sitting at your family table, your parents lovingly reminding you that if you work hard, get good grades, and go to college, a bright future is guaranteed. For decades, this was the roadmap to success, a comforting promise that shaped the dreams of countless young people.
In this first section, we explore the myth of the 'real' job—a concept passed down from well-meaning parents and teachers who grew up in a different era. Back then, a steady job meant security, a pension, and respect. But today, the landscape has shifted. Graduates, armed with expensive degrees, often find themselves moving back home, joining the so-called 'Boomerang Generation.' The dream jobs they envisioned are replaced by unpaid internships, temporary contracts, or roles far outside their fields of study.
How did this happen? Part of the answer lies in the way we were raised. Many of us grew up in a culture of constant praise and participation trophies, where every effort—no matter how small—was celebrated. While this built self-esteem, it also created expectations that the world would reward us just for showing up. When reality hits—when employers don’t call, or jobs don’t materialize—the shock can be overwhelming.
But this is not a story of despair. It’s a call to awaken.
As we leave this chapter, let’s carry with us the gentle realization that the old rules no longer serve us. The world is open, uncertain, and full of possibility for those willing to see it with new eyes. Let’s move forward and discover how to build a foundation for a life on our own terms.
