Carlo Rovelli
An insightful exploration of the evolution of physics culminating in loop quantum gravity, revealing a universe where space and time are quantum, relational, and fundamentally granular.
Carlo Rovelli conceived the structure of this book during a high-speed car drive, only stopping when pulled over by the police.

Imagine standing in an ancient Greek agora, the sun warming the stones beneath your feet, as curious minds gather to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos. This was Miletus, a bustling hub where commerce and culture mingled, and where for the first time, human beings dared to question the stories told by gods and myths. Instead of accepting the world as a tapestry woven by divine hands, thinkers began to look closely, to observe, to reason.
Among these pioneers was a man who proposed a daring idea: that all matter, the seas, the mountains, even ourselves, is made up of tiny, indivisible grains called atoms. These atoms, he said, have no color, no taste, no smell; they differ only in shape and arrangement. Imagine the infinite dance of these particles, colliding and combining, giving rise to the magnificent variety of the world around us.
Yet, not all were convinced. A philosopher named Zeno introduced paradoxes that seemed to deny motion itself. He imagined a race where the swiftest hero could never overtake a slow tortoise, because he must always reach the point where the tortoise was, by which time it had moved further. This infinite subdivision of space and time seemed to trap motion in an endless loop.
Through these early struggles, a new way of knowing emerged: one that valued questioning, debate, and the courage to discard old beliefs. It was not just about accumulating facts, but about learning how to think differently. This spirit, born in the sunlit streets of Miletus, echoes through the ages, reminding us that knowledge is a journey, not a destination.
As we leave this ancient shore, our path leads us to the grand edifice of classical physics, where the universe is seen as a majestic clockwork governed by laws of motion and forces. Let us step forward into that realm, where the ideas of space, time, and gravity take a new and powerful form.
