Benedict de Spinoza
A profound philosophical treatise defining God as infinite substance, exploring mind-body unity, emotions, human bondage, and the path to virtue through reason.
Spinoza wrote The Ethics using a geometric method, presenting definitions, axioms, and propositions similar to Euclid's geometry.

Imagine a universe where all that exists is not a collection of separate things, but a single, infinite essence. This essence, which we call God, is not a distant creator but the very substance of all reality.
From this infinite substance flow all things, not by chance or whim, but by necessity. Every effect follows from a cause, and every cause is contained within this infinite essence. This deterministic view denies any true contingency; nothing happens outside the necessity of God's nature.
To understand this, consider how a triangle's properties necessarily follow from its definition: its interior angles sum to two right angles, and this cannot be otherwise. Similarly, the infinite substance's nature determines all that follows from it. This approach is rigorous and mathematical, using definitions, axioms, and propositions to build a logical structure that leaves no room for doubt.
Think of the universe as a vast geometric figure, where each point and line is a mode or modification of the one substance. These modes are not separate substances but expressions of the infinite essence under different attributes, such as thought and extension.
This understanding challenges traditional views of God as a separate being who creates the world ex nihilo. Instead, God is immanent, present in all things, and identical with nature itself. Everything that exists and can be conceived is in God, and nothing exists outside God.
Such a vision invites us to see the world not as fragmented but as a harmonious whole, where every part is connected through the infinite substance. This unity brings a profound sense of peace and coherence to our understanding of existence.
As we move forward, we will explore how this infinite substance relates to the human mind and body, how emotions arise, and how we can live with greater understanding and freedom within this necessary order.
