Let’s begin our story with a gentle dawn, the kind that quietly stirs the soul from slumber. Imagine standing barefoot in dew-kissed grass, the horizon aglow with the first golden rays of light. This is the moment the Spiritual Exercises invite us into: a sacred pause to ask,
As we open the ancient, weathered pages, we find that the Exercises were born from the heart of a wounded soldier, a man who, in the silence of recovery, asked himself what truly matters. He realized, as many have since, that the deepest longing of the human heart is not for fleeting pleasure or recognition, but for something eternal: to praise, reverence, and serve the One who made us.
Through poetic meditations, the Exercises urge us to reflect on our origins. Where were we a hundred years ago? Nowhere—nothing. Yet, here we are, endowed with intellect, heart, and will.
But what does it mean to serve? Not in the sense of duty alone, but as a joyful response to love. The Exercises propose that our happiness is not found in chasing every passing desire, but in aligning our lives with the One who dreamed us into being. This is the foundation upon which every other lesson rests.
In this first step, we are invited to look at our lives as a tapestry woven from both light and shadow, and to ask: Am I living for what truly lasts?
As the sun climbs higher, we are ready to step into the next stage: understanding how the world around us—every creature, every moment—can help or hinder our journey. Let’s walk onward, hearts open, eyes lifted to the horizon.
