Imagine waking up one morning to realize that everything you see, hear, and touch exists only because your mind perceives it.
Every object, every phenomenon, is inseparably linked to a subject — the knowing self. Without the subject, the world would dissolve into nothingness. This inseparability is not mere abstraction but the very fabric of all experience. The sun you see is not the sun in itself, but the sun as it appears to your eye, shaped by the structures of your mind.
These structures are the forms of intuition: space and time. They are not external realities but the lenses through which your mind organizes the sensory flood.
Consider the principle of sufficient reason — the rule that everything must have a cause or reason. This principle governs all representations and ensures the world hangs together in a coherent order. It manifests as causality in the physical realm, as logical necessity in concepts, as temporal and spatial relations, and as motivation in actions.
For example, when you see a falling apple, you don’t merely observe a movement; you immediately grasp its cause — gravity. This understanding is not learned from experience but is embedded in the very form of your cognition.
Yet, this world of representation is only half the story. As we close this first chapter, prepare to explore the other half — the will — the inner essence driving all phenomena beyond mere appearances. Our journey from the realm of perception to that of metaphysical reality begins here.
