In the cold dawn of a violent world, we meet a boy known only as the Kid.
His journey begins with a rawness that mirrors the frontier he will soon inhabit. In New Orleans, aboard a flatboat, he fights sailors and strangers alike, his fists and scars telling tales of a world where violence is currency. A Maltese boatswain shoots him twice, yet the Kid survives, embodying a grim resilience that will define him.
As he moves westward, the Kid enters a landscape of rain-soaked tents and muddy streets where law is a whispered rumor and violence erupts like wildfire. The burning of a hotel following a religious revival introduces us to a man who will become a spectral presence in the Kid’s life—the Judge. Bald, hairless, and imposing, the Judge’s arrival is marked by confrontation and chaos.
The hotel’s flames lick the sky as men bleed and flee, the Kid and a companion escaping into the rain and mud. This event is a microcosm of the novel’s world—where faith, violence, and survival collide in a relentless storm. The Kid’s silent observation amidst the turmoil hints at his complex nature: part witness, part participant in the unfolding carnage.
Through these early chapters, we glimpse a world where innocence is fleeting, and brutality is the norm. The Kid’s journey is not just physical but existential, a descent into a landscape where the boundaries between man and monster blur. As the rain falls and the smoke rises, we prepare to follow the Kid further into the heart of darkness, where new alliances and horrors await.
Let us now move beyond this turbulent beginning and explore the wider world into which the Kid rides—the lawless and unforgiving Southwest, a land as merciless as the men who roam it.
