Letter to the American Church

Imagine a church not as a mere building or institution but as a living, breathing community — the Bride of Christ, called to be active and authentic in every area of life. Faith is not a private club nor a Sunday-only affair; it is a vibrant force meant to permeate our daily existence and society. This understanding challenges the modern tendency to privatize religion, confining it to personal worship and avoiding the public square. But religious liberty, as envisioned by the founders of America, was never meant to cage faith behind closed doors. It guarantees the freedom to live one’s faith openly, in homes, workplaces, governments, and streets.

Historically, the Church has been a powerful agent for good, shaping laws, advocating for justice, and uplifting the marginalized. Yet, over recent decades, many churches have quietly receded into a 'religious corner,' apologizing for past political involvement and fearing accusations of being 'too political.' This retreat is dangerous, for it diminishes the Church’s influence and betrays the very freedoms that allow it to exist.

Consider the story of William Wilberforce, who refused to confine his faith to private piety but fought tirelessly against the transatlantic slave trade. His faith was public and active, demonstrating that true belief demands engagement with the world’s injustices. Faith expressed only in words without action is like a lamp hidden under a basket, failing to illuminate the darkness around.

We must ask ourselves: Does our faith live beyond the church walls? Are we willing to speak truth, advocate justice, and live boldly? Or have we accepted a watered-down version of Christianity that fears confrontation and shies away from the hard calls of discipleship? This question sets the stage for the challenges and lessons ahead, as we explore how the Church can reclaim its true identity and role in society.
