Imagine a world where every bump, bruise, or emotional discomfort is seen as a threat to be eliminated. This is the world many children today grow up in—a world where safety, especially emotional safety, has become a sacred value, often leading to unintended consequences.
Consider the concept of antifragility, which teaches us that some systems don't just resist shocks—they thrive because of them. Muscles grow stronger when stressed; bones become denser with use. Similarly, minds develop resilience through facing and overcoming difficulties. Yet, modern culture often mistakes fragility for strength, leading to a phenomenon dubbed 'safetyism,' where the quest to eliminate all discomfort ironically fosters greater vulnerability.
Safetyism expands the definition of trauma and danger to include emotional discomfort and offense, resulting in environments where young people may avoid necessary challenges. This avoidance can create a feedback loop: the more we protect, the more fragile children become, which in turn increases the demand for protection.
While the impulse to protect is natural and well-intentioned, it is crucial to recognize that growth requires exposure to challenge. Preparing children for the road ahead means allowing them to encounter manageable risks and discomforts, not clearing the path entirely.
As we move forward, keep this in mind: resilience is not about avoiding pain but learning to navigate it. This understanding sets the foundation for our next exploration—how trusting our feelings without question can lead us astray and how learning to question our emotional responses can empower us to think more clearly and live more fully.
