In the beginning, the idea that a revolution could sweep through a place like Belgrade seemed impossible. The city was weighed down by fear, economic collapse, and the shadow of a brutal dictator. Yet,
Why a symbol? Because symbols transcend words and reach the heart. Just as a red-and-white swoosh instantly calls to mind a global brand, the clenched fist told Serbians there was a movement, a force growing beneath the surface.
But belief alone is not enough. Fear is a formidable foe. The regime thrived on it, using secret police, violence, and intimidation to silence dissent. Yet the activists discovered a secret weapon against fear: laughter. Through street theater and satire, they mocked the dictator and his enforcers. Imagine turkeys with white flowers on their heads running through the streets, with police officers chasing after them like characters from a cartoon. The absurdity made the oppressors look foolish and vulnerable.
This combination of belief, symbolism, and humor created a fertile ground for resistance. It showed that even under the darkest conditions, ordinary people could find ways to challenge power creatively and peacefully. The lesson is clear:
