In the quiet valleys of the Transkei, where rolling hills meet clear streams, a young boy was born into the Thembu royal family. This boy was given the name Rolihlahla, a name that means 'pulling the branch of a tree' or more colloquially, 'troublemaker.'
His father, a chief and counselor to the Thembu king, was a man of great stature and dignity. Though Mandela was not destined to be king, the lessons of leadership and responsibility were imparted to him in the form of counsel and example.
Life in Qunu was simple yet rich in meaning. The village was a tapestry of human relationships, where the concept of family extended beyond the nuclear to include aunts, uncles, cousins, all considered brothers and sisters.
Education came later, first at a mission school where he was given the English name Nelson, a practice common in colonial times.
As we close this chapter of beginnings, we see how the roots of a great leader were planted in the soil of tradition, family, and community. These roots would nourish and sustain him through trials to come.
