Imagine a world where what you believe to be true governs your actions, yet this belief is only a shadow of what actually exists.
Our minds create what can be called a 'pseudo-environment' — a mental map constructed from fragments of information, hearsay, imagination, and cultural influences. This map is not the territory itself but a representation, often flawed and partial.
This triangular relationship between the real environment, our mental picture of it, and our subsequent behavior is crucial. The real environment is vast, complex, and often inaccessible. The mental picture is limited, simplified, and shaped by personal and social factors. Our behavior is a reaction to this picture, not directly to reality. This explains why nations might go to war believing they are defending themselves, when in fact, their perceptions are skewed by incomplete or biased information.
Think of the allegory of the cave, where prisoners see only shadows and believe them to be the entirety of existence. Like those prisoners, we often mistake our mental images for the whole truth. This is not due to ignorance alone but because our cognitive faculties require simplification to function. The world is too vast and complex to grasp fully at once.
Understanding this helps us realize the importance of questioning our assumptions and seeking broader perspectives. It also reveals why misinformation and propaganda can be so powerful—they shape the pseudo-environment and thus influence behavior profoundly.
As we move forward, we will explore how these mental images are formed and maintained, particularly through stereotypes, and how they affect our understanding of others and ourselves. This journey begins by recognizing the limits of our knowledge and the constructed nature of our perceptions.
